Participants can choose to run or walk but should be confident they can complete the 13.9km course (approx. 350m of elevation) in under 3.5 hours.
Participants must carry sufficient food and water, for the time that they expect to complete the course.
The terrain is a mixture of singletrack, forestry roads and 4WD tracks incorporating lots of regenerating native bush and exotic forest, with stunning views of the Whanganui River.
Check out the course map down below!

Those who completed the medium (or long course) of the 2024 Awa Adventure Run will have an idea of what you're in for.... with a couple of tweaks.
From the start line you'll head into a circuit of Little Loopy through the bush beside the river. Then we'll send you up the hill (up the No Regerts track)... up, up, up on a mix of singletrack and 4WD track for about 5km to the course high point. If you pause here, and the weather is nice, you can soak in some spectacular views of the river and Mt Ruapehu off in the distance. The good news is all of the climbing is pretty much done. After a forestry road descent down to the river, its a wee bit more singletrack through the trees before following a flat(ish) 4WD track along the river to the finish line.
That Place MTB Park is about 20km north of Whanganui off SH4, at the end of Kaiwhaiki Road.
It takes around 25 minutes to drive north from Whanganui, or around an hour if you're coming down SH4 from Raetihi. Google maps will help find your way there... but be aware that there is little to no cellphone coverage over the last 5km.
Please respect the neighbours and drive no more than 50km/h when passing Kaiwhaiki marae.
Parking will be onsite at That Place in the paddock adjacent to the Race HQ (woolshed). There's plenty of space here but please car share if you can (it's better for the environment!).
Please take care and follow any instructions from our parking volunteers when entering and exiting the site.
That Place has a number of camping options if you're keen to stay onsite in this spectacular setting beside the river. From pitching a tent or parking a campervan, to staying in one of the gorgeous new glamping pods.

Contact That Place directly through the links above to book onsite accommodation.
If you want to check out the tracks prior to the event, please contact That Place directly to arrange this.
Note: the Masters Games trail running course crosses into adjacent privately owned land and access to this will only be on the event day.
There will be portaloos on site during the event, near the start/finish line and event HQ. There are no toilets out on the course.
There will be a medal ceremony for the placegetters in each age category.
This will be on the grass beside the woolshed at approximately 1:30pm (with some flexibility to ensure that all participants finished).
Please take care of both yourselves and the other runners/walkers on the course. If someone needs help, please stop and help them. Some volunteers hold first aid qualifications.
Some will have radio comms with the Safety Director and Race Director, in case of an emergency. We will have medics on the course to provide assistance.
There are no mandatory gear requirements for this event. You may want to carry something warm and/or waterproof just in case the weather changes, or you are injured and have to wait for assistance.
First Aid
A first aid kit and support is at the Race HQ. Hopefully you don't need to use it!
Withdrawing during the event
If you stop at any point during the event, you must let the nearest course marshal or volunteer know that you have pulled out of the event. Make sure a volunteer records your race number. If you cannot notify a volunteer or marshal, please call or text the Race Director on 021 549 501 as soon as you can.
We have a zero tolerance to littering out on course. Please respect our hosts and the environment that the event takes you through. Pack out any rubbish and dispose of it in the bins at the event hub.
Any participant who is observed to litter on course will be disqualified and excluded from the results and medals.
